Literacy week 2012

Primary school was buzzing with excitement the entire week from 10th Sept till 14th Sept as we enthusiastically had our literacy week celebrations.

The theme for literacy week was ‘Folktales from around the world.’ Grade 3 decided on looking at ‘Humour’ in folktales around the world

B .F. Skinner has rightly said “We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading.
The week long literacy week witnessed lot of activities planned to spread the essence of reading to one and all. Children in grade 3 were involved in book mark making and book cover designing for the books they read. The book  ‘The Silly Chicken’ from Hongkong, ‘ The Monkeys Drum from India’, ‘Teeny Weeny Bop’ from UK, ‘ How turtles got its shell’, The dragon who could not breathe fire’ etc. was cherished by one and all. They also tried linking the attributes and attitudes the silly chicken displayed and wrote it down. The students did role play of the stories read by making stick puppets themselves.

We were happy to have Ms. Nidhi Choudhary who narrated the story ‘The cap seller and the monkeys’ using felt boards and props which was liked by children. We were also blessed to have Mr. Muto a renowned storyteller who read out folktales to the children which they thoroughly enjoyed.
The day culminated by children coming to school in costumes of their favourite characters from the stories read in the class.
Truly it was an enriching experience to each one of us.

Understanding the Central Idea

The students today watched the video ‘We all laugh in the same language.’

and reflected on how we may have different looks, we may talk in different languages, have different cultures, traditions but we all laugh in the same language. We all have emotions like of being happy or sad. We all have families whom we love and cherish our bond with. The discussions were very fruitful as the children were able to compare themselves amongst each other too. They reached a conclusion that though we are different we are alike.

The students then tried constructing a meaningful sentence out of the jumbled set of words given to them. They were able to arrive at the unit’s central idea

‘People are more alike than different from each other’ and penned down their thoughts as a group.

Yet another fruitful day.

Learning Time

The children had fun learning the concept of time where they were a part of a fun filled activity. The students got flash cards in random with digital and analog times written on it. They had to find out their partners to make a chain with the time they had. The activity was fun yet a great way to reinforce the concept

The national costume day for grade 3 was an immense success as children got an opportunity to explore their and their friends cultures. They talked about the features of the place they belonged to. The delicacies that the children brought from their culture was relished by one and all.
